DO I HAVE TO FIGHT FIRES?
No, you do NOT have to fight fires to volunteer.
Volunteer fire companies rely on many different roles beyond interior firefighting. In fact, a large portion of members nationwide serve in support positions that are just as important to keeping the company running and responders safe.
Here are several ways you can help without going inside a burning building:
Support / Non-Firefighting Roles
- Traffic & scene control
- Rehab & firefighter support at incidents
- Equipment & building maintenance
- Driver / apparatus support (with training)
- Fire police (very important role locally)
- Fundraising & event help (Fall Bash, raffles, concerts, etc.)
- Administrative assistance
- Social media & community outreach

You Do What YOU Choose
You decide your comfort level. Some members:
- Never respond to emergency calls and only help with fundraising
- Only assist at community events
- Only handle exterior or support work at scenes
- Or later choose to train for more active roles if they want
There is zero requirement that every volunteer becomes an interior firefighter. Departments need people who simply want to help the community in other ways.
